Vespa Spanners Day:
Overhauling a PX 200 Engine Together Last Saturday, my workshop was bustling with activity, as a Vespa Spanners Day was on the agenda. With a group of eight enthusiastic participants, we delved into the heart of an iconic Vespa: the PX 200 engine. A day full of technology, questions, learning, getting our hands dirty, and above all, a lot of Vespa passion.

The idea behind this Spanners Day is simple: show how to overhaul an engine step by step, explain why certain choices are made, and give participants the knowledge they need to do it themselves at home. No dry theory, but practical application from start to finish. Learning Together, Step by Step
We started the day with a brief introduction. What exactly will we be doing? What does a complete overhaul entail? And what should you pay particular attention to with a PX 200 engine? Then the tools were laid out, and the real work began. The engine was completely disassembled, with each step explained calmly. Why start here? Where should you be extra careful? Which parts are typically prone to wear on a PX 200?

The participants were literally right up close and could observe everything up close. What makes this workshop so valuable is that everyone could ask questions at any time. There was no fixed curriculum to rush through, but instead, there was room to delve deeper into topics of interest. From bearings and seals to shimming, seals, and tolerances—everything was covered. From dirty parts to a fresh engine core After disassembly, the engine was thoroughly inspected. Which parts can be reused and which cannot? How do you recognize wear? And when is “still okay” actually no longer okay? These are precisely the doubts many Vespa riders face at home, which is why we consciously pay close attention to them.
We then continued with the overhaul itself: new bearings, new seals, checking the crankshaft, correctly installing the gearbox, and carefully reassembling the engine. Every step was explained, with practical tips you won’t always find in a manual. The correct use of tools was also covered. When do you need special tools, and when can you do it differently? What are common mistakes DIYers make, and how can you avoid them? This kind of practical knowledge often makes the difference between an engine that “works” and one that is reliable and durable.

Learning by seeing (and doing) Although I rebuilt the engine, the participants were actively involved. Pointing out parts, observing, comparing, measuring, and brainstorming. By following the process from start to finish, the participants gain a much better understanding of how a PX 200 engine is constructed and how everything works together.
For some, this was the first time they had seen the inside of a Vespa engine. For others, it was a confirmation of what they had already tried at home. In both cases, you notice a growing confidence: “I could do this myself someday.” And that’s precisely the goal of these Spanners Days. More than just technology Besides tinkering, there was also time for chatting, exchanging experiences, and sharing Vespa stories. Everyone brought their own background and questions, which made for interesting conversations and shared insights. Because whether you ride daily or tinker with your Vespa occasionally, passion connects.

At the end of the day, a neatly overhauled PX 200 engine stood on the workbench, and the participants went home with a wealth of new knowledge, insights, and motivation to get started themselves. There will certainly be more Vespa Spanners Days in the future, each focusing on specific themes or engines.
